Emergency Preparedness

Isanti County Public Health is committed to the public’s health and safety and leads efforts to plan, mitigate, respond to, and recover from domestic public health and medical threats and emergencies occurring in Isanti County.

Isanti County Public Health is accomplishing these efforts by developing operational plans, community awareness, trainings, and exercises to enhance the preparedness of Isanti County staff, partner agencies and the public.

Public health and medical threats may include infectious disease outbreaks/pandemics, heath effects of sever weather/natural disasters, incidents of mass casualties, toxic chemical spills, radiological releases, and acts of bioterrorism.

Personal, Family, and Community Preparedness

It is easier for individuals, families, and the community to manage emergencies if they have taken some steps before an incident occurs. Emergencies can happen any time, any where, and to any one so Isanti County Public Health encourages folks to take these three easy steps: 1) Get Informed 2) Get Prepared 3) Get Connected.

Influenza

You may already know or have recently heard more about influenza (flu) from the media and community lately. There are actually many kinds of flu that can infect people, birds, and other animals. Health officials have been especially concerned about particular strains of flu lately such as H5N1. Below is a short summary about these different types of flu and web links with additional information.

Seasonal Flu

Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death in people. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year. Every year in the United States, on average 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu; more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and; about 36,000 people die from flu.

Bird Flu

Bird flu also known as Avian Flu (AI) is a viruse that infect birds, including chickens, other poultry and wild birds such as geese and ducks.

Avian flu (AI) is caused by influenza viruses that occur naturally among wild birds. Low pathogenic AI is common in birds and causes few problems. Highly pathogenic H5N1 is deadly to domestic fowl, can be transmitted from birds to humans, and is deadly to humans. There is virtually no human immunity and human vaccine availability is very limited.

Pandemic Flu

Pandemic flu is dangerous human flu that causes a global outbreak, or pandemic, of serious illness. Because there is little natural immunity, the disease can spread easily from person to person. A pandemic flu event could be caused by any new flu virus whether from birds or any other animal. Currently, there is no pandemic flu.
