Isanti County Public Health offers free car seat inspections to the public. The inspection includes free informational brochures, recall list checks, and education about the proper installation and use of the car seat. Inspections are by appointment only, however there are occasional clinics that will be posted in the newspaper and in WIC vouchers. For an Appointment call Matt at 763-689-4071 Isanti County in cooperation with Ucare also distributes car seats to Ucare recipients. One car seat may be distributed to each member or parent provided there is a child under the age of five. To check eligibility call Ucare at 612-676-3351. Four out of five car seats are used incorrectly! Car seats are tested and regulated to a set of standards, if you have an aftermarket product installed on the car seat not recommended by the manufacturer, or have the seat installed other than recommended, you are using the car seat in a way other than tested which puts your child at risk. Often times it is something very small that puts your child at risk for serious injury. For instance, placing the seat-belt webbing (strap) over a child’s winter coat is extremely dangerous as bulky clothing allows for the straps to not sit directly over the child’s shoulders, or a mistake that is made quite often is the retainer clip is placed over the child’s abdomen instead of in line with the child’s armpits. This mistake takes the pressures involved in a car accident away from the child’s stronger bones and puts it over a soft tissue as well as could allow the straps to fall off of the shoulder causing the child to move more or possibly be ejected from the car seat. Minnesota state law currently states that no child may ride in a vehicle under the age of eight and 4'9" tall outside of a car seat or booster seat. However it is recommended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that no child should ride in the front seat until after the age 12 years.
